I’m baaaack….

Summer is officially over. Well, for all intents and purposes it was unofficially over with the end of the Labor Day weekend. I’ve been a little bit behind as you may have gathered. My blog as well as my book have been in stall mode for long enough. It’s time for me to refocus and either shit or get off the pot. I’m also motivated by the fact that some of you have expressed that they’ve missed my blog. That certainly surprised me, and no, it’s not false modesty. I’ve also been told that my book will be a good read and that I should get it done, especially by my wife, whose opinion I respect and trust. So with that said, I’m back.

I’m an ex cop, not a politician or an economist. That is why I don’t generally delve into those two subjects in my blog. But please bear with me. I had an opportunity to ‘holiday’ (that’s European for vacationing) in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmo, Sweden. (Would you believe me if I told you that Chief Scares the Crap Out of Me, the dreaded Indian from Crompond, followed us to Scandinavia? God, how I hate him).

Both are countries which have strong social programs and even principles, of…gasp, socialism, a word which has become synonymous with being infected with herpes in the United States. At least since our President Obama took office. Here are a few reasons why we should fight the dreaded disease of herpes, er I mean socialism:

* 16 months of paid maternity or paternity leave – the parents get to decide how they want to split it between them
* Five weeks paid vacation every year
* Universal healthcare, which the Danes and Swedes don’t seem to complain about too much
* Just about everyone gets a pension from the government
* A work day that ends at 4 or 5 PM. For some reason they believe that being home with your family for dinner is important. And there are not too many businesses open on Sundays.
* A high tax rate. Once again, not too many Danes or Swedes are complaining
* Just about everyone gets around on a bicycle

Now I’m not saying that socialism is the way to go. But the citizens of Denmark, which suffers from the dreaded disease of socialism, has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Food for thought.

Georgia parole board denies clemency for convicted cop killer Troy Davis

Why does it seem that stories like these seem to quite often originate from Bible thumping regions of our country, where religion, guns, football (or pick up trucks) are the holy trinity? The Sunday school I remember taught forgiveness, compassion, and that vengeance was the Lord’s. It also taught me that we all must do the “right thing”. Blood thirsty Bible thumpers (the name of my fantasy football team for next season). Never mind that seven witnesses for the prosecution in Troy Davis case have recanted their original testimony.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Says Executing An Innocent Man Is Not Unconstitutional

While the Troy Davis case is still fresh in our minds, here is another interesting article. A constitutional scholar I am not. But it seems to me that Justice Scalia along with his puppet, Justice Thomas, should adhere to one of my favorite adages: If it looks like shit and smells like shit, then it probably is shit. The case against Troy Davis reeks with the smell of it. His execution would be a travesty of justice. To state that executing an innocent person in not unconstitutional leaves me with a lot of questions. Maybe it’s time to put Justice Scalia to pasture before it is revealed that he wears nothing under his robe, and masturbates while hearing arguments all while exposing himself to Justice Kagan.
